Russell “Big Russ” Smith, respected businessman, mentor, and owner of the well-known Big Russ’ Barbershop, has created a powerful program designed to give young people career opportunities in the professional barbering industry. His vision is to provide training that blends technical skill with personal growth, helping students see barbering as both a livelihood and a pathway to entrepreneurship.

The Big Russ Barber Training Program was established to empower individuals who may not have considered barbering as a serious profession. Through hands-on instruction and guidance, participants gain not only the skills of the trade but also the confidence to pursue a stable, well-paying future.

PROGRAM OBJECTIVES

Barber Appretenticeship Program

Prepares students to become barbers as well as position them for barbershop ownership. The program includes the development of fundamental barber skills necessary to work in the industry, combined with work-readiness and life skills critical to success in the workplace and in life as a whole.

Barber vocational readiness training focuses on preparing participants to become an Apprentice or a Licensed Master Barber. The training is facilitated through a partnership with Big Russ Barbershop. Russell Smith is a well-renowned business leader in Harlem with the status of a “credible messenger” in the community.

Participants are trained in customer service, small business management, as well as styles and techniques for unisex barber grooming. This takes place in a mentoring environment and training is facilitated by master licensed unisex groomers.
